Willamette Valley, Oregon
The Willamette Valley is a 100 mile long sweet-spot nestled between the Coast range to the West and the Cascades to the East, just North of the 45th Parallel. The Coast range creates a 'rain shadow' effect that keeps the valley dry and temperate and the Cascades protect the valley from the extremes of Oregon's interior.
Oregon's cool climate provides a long, slow growing season essential for development of complex fruit flavors in wine grapes.
The 'Cool' climate in Oregon can be extended to reflect the Oregon Spirit which is about a rugged, pioneering individualism on the one hand and a rare spirit of cooperation amongst wineries on the other. Oregon Wineries share resources, facilities, ideas, advice, staff & 'the stage' with each other.
Rollin Soles, Winemaker and Founder, Argyle
Rollin Soles fell in love with the beauty of Oregon while visiting his future adopted home in the late 1970's. At the time he was a graduate student in enology at the University of California at Davis. It was almost ten years later, in 1987 that Rollin co-founded Argyle with the help of Australian vintner Brian Croser whom he had met at UC Davis.
When Rollin arrived in Oregon in 1987, he brought with him 10 years of experience working in cellars throughout Europe, California, and Australia. This experience prepared him for the challenge of establishing Argyle among the elite producers of Oregon.
Rollin was attracted by the cool climate of the Northern Willamette Valley and the challenge of growing world class Pinot Noir and Chardonnay and turning them into to "top-of-class" Sparkling and table wines.
Why Oregon? "First of all, I felt Oregon would be a great place to settle and raise my family. And secondly, I was looking for a professional challenge. The wine industry was young and showing lots of potential. I wanted to be a part of it, to tap into it's potential and see what I could accomplish."
Success for Argyle came during the very first vintage in 1987. When it was released in 1990, the first vintage of Chardonnay was awarded 93 points from Wine Spectator and aded to it's Top 100 Wines in the World that year. In the twenty-plus years years since, he's garnered that distinction 10 additional times... and counting!
Rollin has been recognized as Oregon's 'Go-To-Guy' for consistently age-worthy wines from this fickle, cool-climate region.
Starting Argyle by making world class Sparkling Wine has given Rollin a unique skill set, excelling in Oregon's most difficult vintages.
