Petaluma was founded in 1976 with a focused objective to produce ultra premium wines by carefully selecting the best sites within a particular Australian region suited to a chosen variety, thus creating the concept of Petaluma's 'Distinguished Vineyards'. This approach defied established industry views in the 1970s. In this era, mainstream Australian viticulture practices focused on exploiting Australia's sunny climate and broad scale viticulture. Improved mechanisation and winemaking efficiencies were the core elements that allowed the Australian wine industry to produce solid quality generic style wines.
Petaluma founder Brian Croser believed this approach could only ever guarantee consistent but average wines. Instead, Petaluma's vision focused on the importance of quality viticultural sites in Australia. This approach was a revolution in thinking which would push Petaluma ahead of its peers - and be the foundation for the creation of truly great wines. Wines that live long in the memory and which legacies are made of.
Hanlin Hill Vineyard, Clare Valley for Riesling
Planted in 1968 the Petaluma Hanlin Hill Vineyard is perched at a high 1,640ft above sea-level on the eastern hills of the Clare Valley. The slate geology underlying the Hanlin Hill vineyard is perfect for producing the highest quality Riesling. The hard rock creates Riesling which is invariably defined by a backbone of high acidity, lime intensity and nuances of slate.
Piccadilly Valley, Adelaide Hills for Chardonnay
The Piccadilly Valley is the coolest viticultural region in South Australia and home to Petaluma's Chardonnay vineyards. Tucked in behind Mount Lofty, the Piccadilly Valley is a jigsaw of sub-valleys with an underlying geology up to 1.8 billion years old. Planted on relatively steep north and east facing slopes the thirty year old Chardonnay vines favor delicate Chardonnay flavors and high natural acid.
Mount Barker, Adelaide Hills for Viognier & Shiraz
In 1992 Petaluma was the first to plant vines on the sandy loam soils of Mount Barker's warm western flank. The soils of Mount Barker are formed from the underlying micaceous granitic schist geology and are ideal for the vigorous Shiraz variety and its white partner Viognier, producing ripe but elegantly structured wines.
Evans Vineyard, Coonawarra for Cabernet & Merlot
The Evans Vineyard, planted in 1968, lies in the heart of Coonawarra where the region's famous Terra Rossa red clay over limestone soil reflects the maritime presence of its geological past. The cold Southern Ocean has now receded by some 50 miles, but it still exerts a moderating influence on the climate of Coonawarra, contributing to the region's ability to produce elegant and long-lived Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot wines.

Andrew Hardy, Winemaker, Petaluma
Winemaker Andrew Hardy has a strong conviction of the merit and lineage of wines created from one provenance. True to philosophy Andrew sees his role as 'custodian of the vineyards', believing that if the vineyards are great, and the winemaking responsive, the wines will be outstanding.
With intuitive handling from the first hand pick in the vineyard, Andrew and the Petaluma team adhere to fastidious winemaking standards while responding to what the vintage offers up. No pre-determined formula; just 30 years of experience, careful winemaking and a deep understanding of Petaluma's great vineyards.
Andrew began with Petaluma in 1982, working and studying his way up through the ranks as cellar hand, trainee winemaker and finally lead winemaker. Successfully interweaving practical 'in the vineyard' work with university studies, Andrew completed his Bachelor of Appl. Sci (Wine Science) at University of Adelaide in 1990. Nominated in August 1999 as a finalist in AGT Wine Magazine's 'Winemaker of the Year' award, Andrew is highly respected for his effortless winemaking style, restrained hand in the winery and engaging manner.
Andrew's vision is to craft wines of longevity and charm, wines that are true to region, of real varietal character and unwaveringly expressive of Petaluma's remarkable vineyards.
